Proper Nutrition is important for young children’s development because it is a critical stage for infant’s growth and development in their early years. According to Canada’s Food Guide (2019), “Breastfeeding is important and gives your baby just the right amount of protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, and minerals. Breastfeeding provides antibodies and other immune factors. These help protect against infections and disease” (Health Canada, 2019, “Plan wisely for your baby” section).

As children grow from infancy into toddlerhood and the preschool years, a balanced and nutritious diet continues to play a vital role in supporting their growth, learning, and overall development. Good nutrition contributes to several important aspects of child development, including:

Brain Development and Learning

Nutrients like Iron and healthy fats help children’s brains grow. This improves a child’s memory, attention spam, and focus during daily activities. (Health Canada, 2026).

Growth and Motor Skills

Minerals like calcium and vitamin D help build strong bones and muscles. This helps children develop their physical skills, like running or holding a pencil (Health Canada, 2026).

Energy and Behaviour

Balanced meals with whole grains and protein provide stable energy. This keeps children’s blood sugar level stable and prevents children’s breakdowns that lead to fatigue or challenging behaviours during daily routines (Health Canada, 2026).

Immune System Function

A balanced diet provides vitamins and minerals that help strengthen children’s immune systems, reducing the risk of illness and supporting overall health (Health Canada, 2026).
